Welcome to the Center for Health Science. We are a Holistic Health Clinic and Resource Center offering guidance and the latest science to help you achieve optimal health.

What You Can Do to Maintain Health

We are all bombarded with advertising from drug companies, supplement suppliers, food purveyors and even our government suggesting ways to restore and maintain health.

Here are recommendations based on hard science!

1. Eat a balanced diet, limiting salt, sugar and fats.  Still, that is usually not enough (See “Diet” below!)

2. Eat organic when possible.  Many pesticides, herbicides, trace ingredients in fertilizers, and additives to prepared foods have been shown to alter your gut microbiome, the source of many vitamins and necessary nutrients.

3. Avoid air pollution!  Invest in HEPA air filters to remove tiny particulates proven to cause cancer, heart disease and other disorders.  A tip: you can fit quality furnace filters in less visible windows to filter incoming air, which not only protects your health but greatly reduces housekeeping chores!

My Supplement Recommendations

Everyone should take a food-derived B-Complex! Be careful of ingredients- only take Folate that is natural, not the chemical mimic Folic Acid; at last count 52% of the population has at least one gene copy that makes folic acid unusable.  Insist on 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) or other natural form.  See the CDC website https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/folicacid/faqs/faqs-general-info.html for the facts.

Add 1000-2000 mg Vitamin C, preferably time release. Vitamin C is especially important for breaking down pollutants we breathe in, for maintaining cardiovascular elasticity and for improving absorption of minerals from our diet.

Sleep problems?  You could be among the many that a low in magnesium.  Most of us get too much calcium in our diet from dairy and from acid suppressors.  This causes our kidneys to expel the extra, and can take out needed magnesium as well. The most absorbable forms are magnesium-L-threonate, magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate.  Magnesium oxide and citrate are the least effective.

You may need additional Potassium. Just as kidneys steal magnesium in eliminating excess calcium, kidneys also steal potassium in eliminating excess sodium (salt).  Cardiovascular scientists are now reporting on the importance of  taking potassium along with reducing salt from our diet. Yes, ripe bananas have about 420 mg of potassium. BUT, that is RIPE bananas, when the peels have shrunken down.  You CAN get too much potassium, consult your physician if in doubt.

Take Vitamin D sublingually.  I recommend keeping your D levels above 50 ng/mL.  Vitamin D facilitates absorption of calcium from your food.  It is difficult to get too much vitamin D, and the effect would be excess calcium in your blood.

Vitamin K2 is often overlooked. K2 is made naturally in your body but declines with age.  K2 is necessary for bone health and preventing cardiovascular disease.  Read about it at https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamin-k2.

Over 60? Add Sublingual B12.  B12 absorption declines with age,  Taking 1000 mcg sublingually (or as nasal drops) every day has been proven as effective as B12 injections monthly to maintain adequate red blood cells and prevent B12 deficiency dementia.

Multivitamins are so loaded with chemical forms of nutrients that I do not recommend them to anyone.  If worried about micronutrients consider supplemental Trace Minerals. Avoid multis with folic acid (aka fake folate!) I avoid any supplements with copper, although very low amounts are needed, copper is a powerful neurotoxin in excess.

Diet

As much as we are told we should get everything we need from our regular diet, USDA studies show this is just not possible! According to their surveys,  Americans do not get enough of the following nutrients to meet the USDA recommended intakes.  Depending on age and gender:

  • Up to 97% do not ingest enough Vitamin D,
  • Up to 90% do not ingest enough Choline,
  • Up to 80% do not ingest enough Potassium,
  • Up to 24% do not ingest enough Folate (Vitamin B6)
  • Up to 20% do not ingest enough Magnesium
  • Up to 14% of us do not eat enough Protein,
  • Up to 14% of us do not get enough Vitamin C,
  • Up to 11% do not ingest enough Vitamin B12,
  • Up to 14% of us do not get enough Vitamin C,
  • Up to 11% do not ingest enough Vitamin B12,
