Sexual Function

Sexual Dysfunction is common in both men and women. Arousal issues such as erectile dysfunction, orgasm disorders, decreased libido and pain during intercourse often go untreated due to embarrassment or lack of knowledge. Sexual issues often lead to depression, anxiety and marital discord, which serve to make these issue worse.

A variety of physical issues may impact sexual function, including infections, thyroid irregularities, blood sugar irregularities, liver issues, kidney issues, lung issues, specific nutritional deficiencies brought on by prescription drugs, diet, individual needs and aging.

Western Naturopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been used successfully for generations to treat sexual function issues.

Natural Treatment Approaches

The Western Naturopathic approach to sexual dysfunction focuses on treating causes such as cardiovascular disease, correcting hormone imbalances and promoting healthy hormone production. Many herbs have been shown through preliminary research to increase natural hormone levels and to improve desire and enhance performance.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine approach is to build up the systemic elements of health so that active sexual life will follow naturally. The TCM’s approach may take weeks and even months to take effect.

Low sexual function or desire, when caused by biological conditions, is usually diagnosed as Kidney Yang Deficiency or Kidney Yin Deficiency. This is true for both men and women. These Kidney deficiencies do NOT indicate kidney disease in the Western sense. The signs of kidney deficiency may fall into two patterns, Yin or Yang deficiency. TCM practitioners usually attribute erectile dysfunction to one of two problems, a deficiency of Kidney Yang energy and Blood Stasis in the lower abdomen

Kidney Yin deficiency can also cause impotence. Men or women with signs of “heat,” women with vaginal dryness, or men who have low fluid volume in their ejaculate are likely to be Kidney Yin Deficient. Symptoms of Yin deficiency include sweat, hay fever, dizziness, thirst and/or tinnitus.

Kidney Yang deficiency symptoms include frequent clear urination, cold limbs, fatigue and lower back pain.

In cases of Blood Stasis, the flow of energy (Qi) and Blood is obstructed in the lower abdomen preventing the needed blood flow to create and maintain an erection. This condition often presents with signs of a tight and tender to palpation lower abdominal area. Treatment focuses on breaking the stagnation in the lower abdomen, returning the proper flow of Blood though the affected area.
