Allergies

Allergies and hypersensitivities affect nearly everyone. Allergies that cause itchy eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, wheezing, or itchy skin are called “true” allergies. “Hypersensitivities” included several other reactions to substances. These reactions may appear immediately, or may take days to reveal themselves.

Delayed reactions may include a surprising number of other responses, some subtle and some quite dramatic. Disorders suspected to be linked to immune reactions include arthritis, Crohn’s disease, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psoriasis, Grave’s and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Lupus and many other conditions.

Natural Treatment Approaches

The Western Naturopathic approach to allergies relies on shielding the cells from the effects of histamines, rather than blocking their production. Improving resistance to pathogens and removing offending substances including reactive foods is central to drug-free allergy control.

Drug-free approaches have been well studied and have been proven to help with symptoms associated with airborne and food allergies. Specific herbal and nutritional therapies have substantial evidence of effectiveness, although have not yet been approved by the FDA for these uses.

Traditional Chinese Medicine sees allergy symptoms as arising from several different issues, depending on specific symptoms. TCM considers allergies or hay fever to be an attack of Wind and/or Heat to the exterior of the body, often due to weakened Wei (protective Qi). The two organ systems most involved with food allergies are the Lung and the Spleen. Treatments may be chosen to disperse Wind, nourish Blood, tonify Qi, clear heat, tonify Spleen-Yang and Kidney-Yang and nourish Lung-Yin and Kidney-Yin.
